33 Engine & Truck 5 "B" Shift members honored for their actions on 1900 blk of Cecil Avenue fire.

5/22/08

As noted late last year on our site, a tragic fire struck our community at 1903 Cecil Avenue.  The members of "B" shift 33 Engine & Truck 5 were the first to arrive, on what would be a monumental mark in their careers.   Yesterday, two Departmental General Orders were issued to commend and acknowledge our members, and all BCFD members who operated at the incident.  The following is the "Exemplary Performance Award" being presented to:

Captain John Gereny, of Truck Company # 15

EVD Christopher Coker,  of Truck Company # 5

For displaying outstanding proficiency in the performance of emergency duty.  On May 22, 2007 at 0721 hours, units responded to the above location for the report of a dwelling fire. Upon arrival, members were met with heavy smoke and fire conditions on the first and second floor of an occupied dwelling.

Further assessment revealed an occupant lying on the street who had suffered burns and smoke inhalation.  With a report of people trapped, the above listed members at great personal risk to themselves fought against the elements to locate and rescue two trapped occupants and brought them to safety.

Due to the tenacious efforts of these members, two less lives were claimed at this tragic fire.

Members  who were  "riding" 33 Engine &  Truck  5  on that day were:

33 Engine :

Acting LT: Gary Toskes

Acting Pump Operator : David Edwards

Pipeman : Gustave Siegel (detailed from E-13)

Leadoff : Stephen Glenn (detailed from T-15)

Fire Academy Ride Along : Amanda Stevenson

Truck 5 :

Lt. : John Neuberger

EVD : Raymond Edsall

EVD :  Christopher Coker

Stepman :  David Olsen

For Performing Exceptional Fireground Operations as a unit.

On May 22, 2007 at 0721 hours, a dwelling fire was reported at the above location. Units arrived to a very dramatic scene that involved heavy fire and smoke conditions from the first and second floors of a two story brick row house, in addition to a civilian lying in the street who had suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation prior to jumping from a second floor window.

As members entered the dwelling they were met with adverse conditions caused by heavy smoke, heat and fire throughout the dwelling. With a report of persons trapped, members performed search and rescue operations on the second floor in the midst of deteriorating conditions and were successful in locating and rescuing two victims.

Members worked cohesively to affect rescues, perform extinguishment operations limiting the spread of fire to the adjacent dwelling and perform resuscitation efforts to sustain the lives of victims suffering from life threatening injuries.

These actions were performed at great personal risk.
